Evelyn Kunda: weaving connection and courage.
At Pātaka in Aotearoa, bilum and photography shared the work of PNG human rights defenders. Artist and activist Evelyn Kunda also welcomed visitors into the practice of bilum weaving.
Sanap Wantaim — Stand Together was presented at Pātaka Art + Museum in Porirua from 21 June to 4 August 2024. Photographs by Paul Wolffram appeared alongside bilum made by members of a Papua New Guinean network of human rights defenders.
PNG artist and activist Evelyn Kunda led drop-in bilum weaving workshops as part of the exhibition. The project connected creative practice with the work of women supporting survivors of sorcery accusation-related violence, bringing their stories and knowledge to audiences in Aotearoa.
