Digital & business services
New connections. Wider participation.
Researched 24 October 2026 · Independent sector guide
Industry overview
Telecommunications, digital infrastructure, financial services and professional support help PNG businesses operate and reach customers. The sector enables other industries through communication, payments, information and administration. Its value depends on whether services are accessible and useful to firms and communities.
Services & value chains
Network operators, internet providers, technology firms and business advisers form part of this ecosystem. Digital tools can support bookings, traceability, customer communication and record keeping. Financial and professional services help businesses manage payments, compliance and commercial relationships.
People & places
Port Moresby and Lae are important commercial centres, but the broader opportunity includes rural firms, schools and community services. The Department of ICT’s Gabagaba facility story provides a practical example of shared community access. Infrastructure investment needs to be matched with skills and local support.
Opportunities & challenges
Simple, reliable tools can help small businesses reach buyers without expensive physical expansion. Affordability, power, coverage, digital skills, fraud prevention and trust remain important. Mobile subscriptions are not the same as individual internet users, and neither measure alone demonstrates regular productive use.
Current perspective
NICTA’s National ICT Indicators Report 2025 is a sector-specific reference. The World Bank’s July 2026 economic update identifies digital connectivity among the foundations needed for wider investment and job creation. Historical community projects illustrate delivery approaches and are not presented as new launches.
