Forestry & forest products
A forest economy rooted in custodianship.
Researched 24 October 2026 · Independent sector guide
Industry overview
PNG’s forests support customary livelihoods, biodiversity and commercial forest products. The industry includes resource management, harvesting, timber handling and processing. A credible forest economy must account for the rights of customary owners and the long-term health of the resource, alongside commercial output.
Products & value chains
Forest products move through resource assessment, permissions, harvesting, transport, processing and sale. Timber legality and supply-chain documentation are important to buyers. Plantation development and domestic processing have different requirements from natural forest harvesting, so the distinction matters when assessing an opportunity.
People & places
Customary owners and forest communities are central participants, rather than simply neighbours to commercial activity. FAO’s work with Indigenous forest custodians illustrates how community knowledge and digital monitoring tools can support forest protection and better information.
Opportunities & challenges
Responsible processing, reforestation and stronger traceability can improve the quality of participation in timber markets. Compliance, land rights, environmental safeguards and transport costs need careful attention. Conservation finance also requires sound governance and verification; a forest area alone is not proof of a saleable carbon asset.
Current perspective
PNGFA describes work on legality systems, governance, inventory and forest management. Its current programme material is the reference for regulatory activity. FAO’s Indigenous monitoring story offers a complementary community perspective, rather than an endorsement of a commercial timber project.
